EDITOR - In response to the questions you asked in the Standard: 'Should the town council foot the bill for the paddling pool?'
The answer to this is an absolute no.
When East Lindsey District Council took over the foreshore from the town council in 1974, they took over everything.
Gradually (and this brings into play your second question as to whether ELDC are letting Sk
egness down) there has been a process of hiving off, or removing various parts of the foreshore activities, and this is still going on today.
Examples of these are the two paddling pools, one of which people pressure reversed, beach chalets, festival pavilion, deckchair sites, and recently talk of the waterway, because no-one can be found to operate this.
Am I missing the point on this last one?
In years gone by didn't the Skegness Town Council, and later ELDC, operate the waterway, and indeed all the foreshore amenities?
So in this respect, by not operating facilities like the waterway, ELDC are letting Skegness down.
At the same time I believe over the years some of the amenities become less appealing to the visitors, so need replacing with more up to date things, which need to be provided and run by ELDC.
So I would say to the district council - don't opt out of your commitment to the town, its residents and visitors.
If the district council want to give back to the town some of the less profitable amenities such as paddling pools, why don't they give back some of the more profitable ones such as car parks?
The town would not require grants from ELDC then!
